Herman lives on a small island called Sumba, located east of Bali, in the Nusa Tenggara archipelago. His ancestor, Umbu Walu Sasar, fled the war-ravaged island of Java. With his horse, guided by heavenly powers, he crossed the ocean and reached Sumba. To perpetuate warrior traditions, a “Pasola” is organized each year on the island. Two mounted teams chase each other and attack with spears. Only the bravest participate, those who have the fastest and most powerful horses.
